I’d like to tell you about our vision for the Gratitude Walk.
I think you’d agree that we have so much to be grateful for in our lives…even just the tiniest of things.
We all wake up every morning; we have someone to love or loves us, the beautiful Chico sunshine and our majestic Bidwell Park, to name a few.
But it’s also bigger than that. Beyond ourselves there is so much more to be thankful for; a special teacher or professor, our fire crews, our law enforcement professionals, and food banks that make sure nobody goes to be hungry.
Use your imagination, I’m sure you can think of many more in your own life.
Our goal is to get the entire Chico community thinking about what they’re grateful for.
This unity-building event’s intent is to inspire recognition and support for those in our community that gives in service to a more vibrant, loving, connected and healthy community.

BENEFITS OF GRATITUDE
Based on an article from Harvard Health Publishing, in positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with:
- Greater happiness.
- It helps people feel more positive emotions,
- Relish good experiences,
- Improve their health,
- Deal with adversity,
- Build strong relationships.
With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. People usually recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves. As a result, gratitude helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals — whether to other people, nature, or a higher power.

CHICO — Ever feel like taking a walk just for the gratitude of it?
That’s one of the ideas behind the Gratitude Walk, a fundraising event that will take place in Bidwell Park on Nov. 5.
The event is the brainchild of Chico resident Crystal Lively, who wanted to do something to “connect the community” while also raising funds for a good cause.
“This has been on my heart for several years and it seemed as if this was the time to make it happen and bring it out into our community,” Lively said. “The goal is to bring gratitude to the hearts and minds of each of us individually and together collectively.”
Funds from the event, raised by sponsorships and entry fees, will go to three local organizations. Lively said organizers polled the community so they could select the beneficiaries.
“The No. 1 response was ‘community,’ so we have decided to donate to the North Valley Community Foundation, due to their work of supporting local people and organizations that build a strong, healthy, creative and connected community,” Lively said.
The park itself received the second most votes, so funds will go to Friends of Bidwell Park. The third most popular response was for spiritual and religious leaders, so the third recipient will be the Chico Area Interfaith Council.
On the day of the walk, stations will be placed throughout the route “to reinforce the feelings of gratitude and continue to connect our community with each other,” Lively said.
